America can do better

Today, as we are in the midst of Chanukah and looking forward to Christmas, I am filled with gratitude for all the good fortune in my life. My husband and I have jobs we love, health insurance, a warm home, excellent schools for my stepkids, and plenty of nutritious food to eat.

But not everyone is as lucky as we are. Over 20% of children in America live beneath the poverty line. Far too many go to bed hungry at night, and must rely on government programs for breakfast and lunch – programs that are in danger of being eliminated for budgetary and – as hard as it is to believe – ideological reasons.

Economic hardship has forced despairing mothers and fathers to make heartbreakingly difficult choices. Mortgage? Heat? How about a new pair of shoes for a growing child? Never mind a holiday gift to unwrap. Our neighbors are struggling just to survive. This is simply not acceptable to me.
